Pack a Shoebox!

A favorite mission of our family is to pack a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child through Franklin Graham's ministry Samaritan's Purse.  A shoebox is packed with items such as school supplies, hygiene items, and toys.  The boxes are sent to children around the world.  At the time of receiving the boxes, the children also receive the good news of Jesus.
We buy some supplies for our boxes but also include some freebies we've received like cinch sacks, sunglasses, notepads, and pencils.  We include tools for an older boy's box and we include sewing kits for an older girl's box.

Dropping off our shoeboxes:
This year our boxes are bound for either Niger or Mexico.

A youth group at church packs shoeboxes from money donated to the church.  We had the privilege of shopping for the shoebox items with the donations.  That was a blessing to be able to pick out items that will bless others.

Our last way to help this mission is to volunteer a shift at the Relay Center.  Our church accepts shoeboxes from several surrounding towns and we package them up into big boxes to be taken to a processing center.  We boxed up over 300 shoeboxes!

It's never too late to start thinking about packing a shoebox for next year!

November Humane Society Field Trip

We had a nice trip to a local no-kill animal shelter.  We had the chance to "walk" some dogs, play with some puppies and then cuddle some cats!

Friday Night Marching Band

On Friday night, the Junior High and High School marching bands took the field.

They formed a tunnel for the football players.

Thankfully the weather wasn't too cold, but we did have to sit through half a football game.

Ready to perform.  They had a couple of moves to do within their short song.

After playing, they shadowed a high school player through their entire performance.

You have to be careful when those trombone players turn around quickly!

All the students playing the school song.

Marching band has been a great experience this fall.

Poultry Palace

At our farm, I have a building solely dedicated to my chickens.  We've named it the Poultry Palace.  The first tenants were moved in this month-- 90+ chicks that are over a month old.

We have an area with a couple of heat lamps for those chilly fall evenings.

They have a long run/pen where there water and feeders are located.  I bought a new feeder and waterer that is more accommodating to a larger flock.

We enjoyed watching the puffed up Americana in the middle.

The run was made economically using sheets from inside a grain bin.

These are all egg layer chicks so we'll have a lot of eggs by February!

Band Extravaganza

Monday night was Band Extravaganza where the 7th/8th grade band and the high school band performed.  The junior high band participated in several parades this fall and it culminated with a short field routine at the last football game.

1st place for junior high bands at Ottumwa's Oktoberfest parade.

1st place at Centerville's Pancake Days parade.

Marching band has been fun, now it is time to start on concert band music.
