Happy New Year 2012

I have fond memories of celebrating New Year's Eve with my family and other family friends. We'd rotate houses every year and we always had a good time. And now it is our turn to start some traditions.

We've gotten together with friends in the past and this year was no different. We met at our church youth house at 5pm and had a great time with 11 kids and 9 adults.

We enjoyed a potluck supper and visited. I had a few crafts planned for the kids and they were sooooo eager to do them.
First craft: Homemade Scratch & Sniff Ornaments

I found the idea here. I mixed two tablespoons water with one packet of Kool-aid and put it in an ice cube tray (instead of using a cup for each color). I put several colors in the tray and then the kids used paintbrushes to paint with the mixture. Oh yes, the scents were a bit strong! But once they dried, you had scratch & sniff ornaments.

Here are the kids doing their best to paint the ornaments. I chose the ornaments from Free Bible Printables.

Second craft: Stickers (leftover from a previous event that I had bought them for)

They did sticker gingerbread scenes. This was definitely the least messiest craft.

Third craft: Gingerbread houses!

The kids had a blast getting messy with frosting! I made the frosting and we all brought the candies to do the decorating (and I think there was some eating going on, too).

Eight kids with some grand ideas for their house! It was a bit tricky, but I think the homes turned out pretty good. The kids enjoyed decorating with M&Ms, Twizzlers, Sweetarts, Skittles, chocolate chips, marshamllows, gum drops and more! We used white frosting, green frosting (mostly because I had it leftover from a previous Christmas Tree cake) and then we dusted it all with powdered sugar to look like snow. Our only dilemma . . . figuring out how to get all the gingerbread masterpieces home . . . in one piece.

Eden, Trace & Becca.

Ephraim, Eliza & Emmet with their nearly-completed houses. Ephraim was able to make his two stories tall!

Eden, Eliza & Becca in a group hug before it was time to go. And no, it wasn't midnight. It was barely 8:30, but it was still time to go home.

Happy New Year! We can't wait to see what 2012 holds for all of us!
