When a child has birthday party, it is nice to first decide on a theme. We do limit our children in what their theme could be. Either through the power of suggestion or by simply giving them a couple of approved choices. The girls had seen the idea of a tea party in a magazine and I said that would be just fine. Emmet was originally planning on a planet/space party but then settled on a baseball theme, either would have been fine with me.
For Emmet's cake, my mom was able to check out the ball glove cake pan from their local library.

We baked the cakes on Friday and then frosted them on Saturday, the 6th. Here is Emmet helping with the frosting! They really did a good job helping!
Emmet's finished cake with a #7 on it.
For the girls' cake, I went online to find ideas for a tea pot cake. Again, ideas are everywhere. It looked like some used a cake pan meant to make a ball. I found just such a cake pan from a friend and concocted my own tea pot cake, using the napkin as a guide. We think it turned out pretty cute!
The handle and spout are a styrofoam tray. We tried using cake at first but it was too heavy and got crumbly.
We had a few nervous moments while frosting the tea pot, like when Eliza was right beside me and slipped on the chair and grabbed the table! But the cakes survived until the party.
Making the cakes for my children's birthday parties is fun for me. It is much cheaper than store-bought and it tastes much better, in my opinion. I think the children enjoy seeing the cake take shape while they watch. And they get to learn a few cake decorating skills, too.
Our party began with cake and singing at 4pm sharp. I'm a bit OCD that way but everyone was well informed of the party start time.
Prior to 4pm, we had picture time.
Emmet with his dark chocolate fudge cake with chocolate frosting. He was pretty pleased with how it turned out!
A picture of all four children.
And a picture or two of all of us!
Blowing out the candles! Stay tuned for more photos!
