Bible Quiz 2013

(I'm a bit behind in my blogging, but then with the apples and sweet corn ready, they take priority).

Bible Quiz at the Southern Iowa Fair was held for 3 days, July 17-19.  We were able to participate all three days and with others from our church.  We had a pretty big team this year (up to 11 members).  Most of the others who participated were individuals but we had quite a few participate on any given day.
The questions for Bible Quiz are distributed in the spring and we incorporated them into our homeschool routine.  The same questions are used for two years in a row and this was the 2nd year for this set of questions.  I was amazed at how much the children remembered from last year, which made it easy to start with some questions we didn't cover last year.

Enjoy some pictures and sample questions.

First they do a pee wee round with children ages 3-6.  They have easier questions.  After a round of using the buzzers, then they do a round where everyone gets to answer a question.  We want it to be fun for everyone and want everyone to feel like they knew something.

Some of the other pee wees.

The questions for the pee wees were something like:
Where did Micah say the Messiah would be born?  Bethlehem
What are the two divisions of the Bible?  Old Testament and New Testament

Then it is time for the older children to compete.  Here are some from our team:  Emmet, Micah, Ephraim and Levi.
Our church anniversary tshirts from last year were our team shirts last year and this year.

Ephraim worked hard on some of the harder questions and was able to answer correctly several times.

Some of those questions were:
What does the Bible tell us about the life of Jesus between the time he was 12 and 30?  He obeyed his parents, grew mentally and physically, and gained favor with both God and people.
What are five different signs of Jesus' soon return?  Increase in evil, wars, earthquakes, famine and false prophets.

Here is Emmet answering a question.

There were also some questions in the middle range (20 points).
Here is a sample of those:
Who knows when the Rapture will occur?  Only God the Father
How long did Jesus walk and talk with his apostles after His resurrection?  40 days

I don't think I mentioned it before, but it was hot.  Hot.  Hot.  Ninety-five degrees.  We brought ice water along and there were fans blowing but if you see some glazed over expressions on the children, it's because they are done.  They can only last on stage for so long in the heat.

All the Day 1 competitors.  Their prize on this day was a medallion and everyone got one.  Everyone was a winner.

After Bible Quiz we stopped by the Clover Kids booth to see the exhibits that the boys entered.  They each had three items.  Ephraim brought a Lego exhibit and two of his VBS crafts.  Emmet brought a Lego creation, an artwork piece  and a VBS craft.

What was called the weeping prophet?  Jeremiah

What gifts were given to Jesus by the Wise Men?  Gold, Frankincense & myrrh

More members of our team on Day 2:  Sevanna, Allie, Micah, Ephraim and Emmet.

Another round.   We switched it up so that the kids got a break before playing again.  All the kids got a chance to play one, two or even three times during the 2 hours of Bible Quiz.

Did I mention it was hot?  It was.  Grandma Twyla brought fans to use to cool oursevelves.  Doesn't Eliza look cool?

Remember that glazed-over look I mentioned earlier??

This was our team from Day 2, we had all 11 members here on this day.  They did very well!

After Bible Quiz, my children were anxious to walk through the animal barns.  All of them.  Because we've never seen a cow or a hog before.  And then we walked through all the animal barns all three days.  I must admit, it was nice to stop and visit with family and friends who have animals exhibited.  And we were getting ideas for next year.
Can't forget to climb the big tractor.

Day 3

On Day 3, we always do Crazy Quizzes.  That includes the parents, audience members, etc.  This first round was the pee wees with a parent.  Some of you may recognize the man on the left as an RCA missionary home on sabbatical.   No pressure, Seth!
Eden was super excited to answer her prized question:
What do we mean when we say that God is immutable?  God never changes, He is always the same.
She has studied that one and it quickly became her favorite.  Thankfully she was able to answer it once or twice in competition.  And after one time, she had a moment of "excessive celebration."

Then we played teams.  Our family was a team against two other families.
Here Ephraim was able to answer his favorite question:
What twelve Old Testament books were written by minor prophets?  Hosea, Joel, Amos,
Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi

All the quizzers from Day 3.  Great job!

And, because the children remember that I took Emmet's picture on the tractor on a previous day, they needed their picture taken on Day 3.

Imagine our surprise to see that we made the paper . . . twice!

Bible Quiz was a great time for everyone.  We all enjoyed it and enjoyed learning along the way.  Many thanks to those who came to watch us and cheer us on!
